Global Automakers Hit by Nexperia Chip Shortage, Production Delays Loom
Automobile manufacturers worldwide are grappling with a worsening shortage of basic microchips, forcing production delays across the industry. Honda's North American factories are among the first affected, with other carmakers expected to face similar disruptions in the coming weeks.
The crisis stems from Nexperia, a Dutch semiconductor manufacturer, halting shipments from China earlier this month. Political tensions between the Netherlands, China, and the U.S. have exacerbated supply chain vulnerabilities, leaving automakers with dwindling chip inventories.
At the heart of the dispute lies Nexperia's microchip plant in Stockport, UK—one of Britain's largest semiconductor facilities. The £192 million-revenue site has become a geopolitical flashpoint, with UK lawmakers warning that Chinese ownership poses national security risks, including potential data breaches and supply chain leverage.
